SYAA 2022 Participants

10 female film makers selected to participate at  the Sisterhood of Young Animation Auteurs workshop

Sisterhood of Young Animation Auteurs (SYAA), the first and widest study programme in Romania designed for animation female auteurs has its 10 finalists. Following the process of analysing all the 20 applicants, 10 were selected from Romania and the Republic of Moldova to attend the workshop in Bucharest, between the 29th of August and the 4th of September.

Together with the organizers of the project, the Polish producer Katarzyna Gromadzka and the Romanian screenwriter Raluca Mănescu, the leaders of the second edition of SYAA, have annalised and graded all 20 applications, following the eligibility and conditions of participation that were detailed in the Rules& Regulations. The decision was influenced by the quality of the film project, the originality of the script, knowledge of film production in general, motivation and nonetheless, compatibility with the programme designed by the organizers together with the mentors.

The 10 artists together with their projects that were selected are:

  • Adela Holdon, Work in Progress
  • Cristina Pîrvu, Working Title
  • Daria Căpățână, Learning with Zuppy and Zupzup
  • Izabela Pitica, Error
  • Alexandra Jucan, Threads
  • Ștefania Bodescu, După Deal (Beyond the hill)
  • Teodora Mihăilă, Open. Closed
  • Maria Brudască, A horse in a SwanSea
  • Melissa Antonescu, The street
  • Flavia Sofia Matei, A little light

The main goal of SYAA is to increase the number of female filmmakers leading their own animation projects. We are determined to achieve this by offering them a complex study program, meant to encourage them to further develop their knowledge on animation film production, distribution and direction.

The program will consist of a series of events: lectures, presentations, practical workshops, screenings and networking events structured in the span of 7 days, with up to 4 events daily, and it will provide the participants with coaching on a variety of topics related to animation films, giving them all the tools to fulfill their proffesional ambitions. They will learn how to create their artistic portfolios, what instruments to use in developing an idea, what are the main means to leverage an independent artistic career and how one can start an animation studio.

The workshops and presentations will be conducted by Katarzyna Gromadzka (producer, Poland), Raluca Mănescu (screenwriter, România), Kamila Dohnalova ( producer, Czech Republic), Oksana Kurmaz (animator, director, Ucraine), Zsuzsanna Kreif (director, Hungary) together with other mentors which are at the moment pending confirmation.

Sisterhood of Young Animation Auteurs is a project initiated by the Animest Association and is co-financed by the National Cultural Fund Administration and Eurimages, as part of the Gender Equality Programme funded by the European Comission.
