16 - 22 Mar 2025

SYAA 23

The Sisterhood of Young Animation Auteurs - SYAA was born out of a gender imbalance in the Romanian animation film industry and aims to provide solutions, support and promotion for local animators.

During the third edition in 2023, which took place in Bucharest from 18 to 25 August, 11 young women filmmakers went through a series of lectures, presentations, practical workshops, 1:1 meetings, screenings and networking events, during which they developed their animated short film projects. Workshops and presentations were given by Katarzyna Gromadzka (producer, Poland), Raluca Mănescu (scriptwriter, Romania), Waltraud Grausgruber (festival director Tricky Women, Austria), Matea Milic (festival producer of Animafest Zagreb, Croatia), Daria Kashcheeva (animator/director, Czech Republic), Moe Honan (producer and voice director, Ireland), Theodor Pârvu (lawyer) and Damian Groves (director, UK/RO).

SYAA's main aim is to increase the number of female animated filmmakers by providing women working in the film industry with support in the development of animated short film projects, as well as a comprehensive study programme designed to encourage them to develop their skills in animation production, distribution, storytelling and directing.

The programme is aimed at artists from Romania and the Republic of Moldova, Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia and Ukraine and is free of charge.
